Politics and political satire go hand in hand. A little bit of Googling on these two keywords would result in the likes of Aristophanes (called the prince of ancient comedy) to the modern day political satires in The Daily Show and The Colbert Nation on Comedy Central for those familiar with American television (or what's left of it after the flooding of realty shows that seem to defy rationality and creativity alike).
I'm a big fan of The Daily Show which tags itself as political comedy and fake news. The show manages to bring out the ridiculousness of the various so called "news" channels which have become sources of sensationalist media that impregnates facts with heavy doses of fiction to bloat the straight facts to a state of perpetual chaos and bytes of information that can be fed to people through tubes rather than be chewed intelligently.
IMHO! - Political parties are social unit of people whose aim is to gain authority and hopefully create enough positive impact to improve the lives of masses and ensure successful future for coming generations. In a way political parties are janitors whose aim should be to keep the society clean. Of course the duty of the masses is to continuously measure the cleanliness and ensure they also play a proactive role in the society at their own individual level. Umm..that's the extent of my dive into the political theory.
Purpose of this Post - This post is about the need of greater popularization of political satire in India (or for that matter any other country which the constitution guarantees the freedom of speech and expression). I won't go into the debate of freedom of speech when thrown into the chaos of religion or racialism. I would stick to pure bantering of political ecosystem in a country. A country is a pot boiling with various political ideologies that keep striking against each other to woo the masses to ensure their survival in the political system.
A Concentric Ball Structure! - The apparent layer that permeates the information or ideologies of political parties to the masses is a secondary layer of political news disseminating structure formed by various forms of media (or communication) over the core ball made up of political parties. My imaginative mind imagines the political parties (governing as well as in opposition) as loudspeakers that blow out large amount of information that is both useful (consider economic plans, laws, ordinances etc.) as well as irrelevant bull (politically dividing conversations, human "politicians" with ridiculous ideologies that defy rationalism, irresponsible behaviour etc.).
That's a lot of information being thrown at the masses. The role of the media should not be to filter out this information but to tag this information into useful and ridiculous (pardon me but I can't seem to find a substitute for this word). However the media in last few decades have gone from information provider to sensationalism creator. It has become a powerhouse of churning quick selling information that is like the fast food of news. You just have to gulp it and it tastes good because it's been developed for taste buds not for suffering liver or pancreas!
Why do we need to popularize political satire?
Political Satire is funny and informative - I would have to confess like a lot of twenty or thirty something I don't have the patience to watch mainstream media with so called "news". I don't have patience for ridiculousness in the news. I can patiently watch a serious documentary on a crisis or political commentary but I'm sorry I cannot watch sensationalism.
Political Satire brings out the crux - In an article in NY Times on Jon Stewart (quote)..And they've done so in ways that straight news programs cannot: speaking truth to power in blunt, sometimes profane language, while using satire and playful looniness to ensure that their political analysis never becomes solemn or pretentious (unquote).
Political Satire brings laughter - Not a very serious point but in today's news where the focus is on creating sensationalism which I'm not sure is so good for either our brain or heart, a good dose of laughter is all we need at the end. A political satire serves the dual purpose of bringing out laughter as well as information.
These are a few reasons I think we need to popularize political satire and probably need an India The Daily Show. There are a few contenders I think but we need serious fun-filled political commentary to sane out the blah-blah of political parties as well as the sensationalism of so called mainstream media. A quick Google search of "Political Satire in India" is a good starting point to workout your brains in this subject!

A joke is a joke. There's an expression - I don't know if you have it - that's 'adding insult to injury.'
